About the Author
Shawn is from the snowy heights of South Lake Tahoe, California. He studied at Akita International University for 9 months from 2011-2012; that was his first experience in Japan. From there he fell in love with the culture and the people, especially drinking sake and hunting for snow demons in sub-zero weather, it’s an Akita thing.
Shawn got his Bachelor’s in History in 2012 from San Francisco State, and then his Masters in History from the University of Edinburgh later in 2016.
His first job, which didn’t require him to dress like Santa, was as an elementary school English teacher in Aomori prefecture from 2012-2015. There he met his lovely wife, kidnapped her, and moved the two of them to Kyoto city to begin work as a History and Philosophy teacher at a private high school; a job he still has to this day.
Shawn loves the outdoors. Kayaking, hiking, SUP’ing with his husky wolf-dog are among some of his favorite pastimes.
His current dream is to conquer the world through his writing and someday make a living solely off of those endeavors. If anyone has read Peter Hessler or Colin Thubron, men who travel the world and are gifted in illuminating a place/time/people, that is Shawn’s dream.
I also am on Medium, where I write about East Asia more broadly, Political Philosophy, Geopolitics, and more.
